The Short Version
Mild steel is cheaper upfront, stronger, and easier to repair. Aluminium is more expensive but doesn't rust, weighs less (kinder to the motor), and looks cleaner long term. Stainless steel is sometimes used for accents or fully — pricier than both and overkill for most homes.
In Singapore's humidity and salt air (especially in East Coast, Pasir Ris, Sentosa Cove), the lower-maintenance pitch of aluminium has real value. Inland, mild steel with proper hot-dip galvanising and powder coating holds up well too.
Mild Steel: The Default
Mild steel is what most auto gates in Singapore are made from — cheap, strong, easy to fabricate into custom designs. Properly treated (hot-dip galvanising + epoxy primer + powder coating), a mild steel gate lasts 15–25 years before serious rust becomes an issue.
Cost for a fabricated mild steel swing gate: $1,500–$3,500 depending on design complexity. Add the motor kit ($1,500–$3,500) for the total installed price. Sliding mild steel gates run $500–$1,000 more.
Aluminium: Lower Maintenance, Modern Look
Aluminium doesn't rust. It oxidises into a thin protective layer instead. That alone eliminates the single biggest long-term maintenance issue with auto gates in Singapore. Aluminium is also 60–70% lighter than steel, which means less stress on the motor and longer motor lifespan.
Cost premium is 50–80% over mild steel. A fabricated aluminium swing gate runs $2,500–$5,500. Plus motor and installation, total installed runs $4,000–$8,000+. For homes near the coast, this premium pays back through eliminated rust treatment over 10 years.
Design Differences
Mild steel can be welded, cut, and bent into almost any shape — including very ornate decorative gates. If your design includes scrollwork, custom motifs, or laser-cut panels with intricate patterns, mild steel is usually the right material.
Aluminium is typically used for clean, modern slat-style designs. Horizontal slats, vertical slats, framed laser-cut panels — these all suit aluminium. Highly ornate scrollwork is harder and more expensive in aluminium.
Maintenance Reality
Mild steel: wash 2–3 times a year with mild soap. Inspect for rust spots annually, especially at welds and bottom edges. Touch up paint as needed every 2–3 years. Full repaint every 8–12 years ($800–$2,000). Failure to maintain leads to rust-through and replacement.
Aluminium: wash 2–3 times a year. No rust to manage. Powder coating may fade slightly over 10+ years in full sun but won't fail structurally. Touch-ups are rarely needed. Total maintenance cost over 15 years is typically 60–70% lower than mild steel.
Which One For You
Tight budget, inland location, no plans to move for 10+ years: mild steel, with proper galvanising and powder coating. Coastal location (East Coast, Sentosa, parts of Pasir Ris, Changi), or you don't want to think about gate maintenance: aluminium. Designing a heritage-style ornate gate: mild steel, no contest. Modern minimalist design: aluminium looks the part and lasts.
