Most homeowners think of an auto gate as a fixture, like a door. It is closer to a piece of mechanical equipment with an enclosure: a motor, a controller, a power supply, safety sensors, a remote interface, and the metalwork your neighbours see. The metalwork determines how the gate looks. The motor and controller determine whether the gate is still working in year five. The vast majority of gate quotes are sold on the metalwork and silent on the mechanical specification, which is why the year-5 failure rate is what it is.
Verdict before you scroll: budget S$3,500 to S$5,500 for an aluminium gate with a mid-range motor (right for most inland landed homes), S$5,500 to S$10,000 for mild steel with smart-access integration, S$8,000 to S$25,000 for stainless steel 304 or 316 (the only honest choice for coastal-proximate properties). The three material options and where each one is right
Material choice determines maintenance burden, aesthetic flexibility, and how the gate ages. Pick the material that matches your property's location and your tolerance for upkeep, not the cheapest one on the quote.
Aluminium — the default for inland landed
Lightweight (a 3m × 1.8m aluminium gate weighs roughly 90 to 110 kilograms versus 180 to 220 kilograms for mild steel of the same size), naturally corrosion-resistant, low-maintenance. Available in wood-grain powder-coat finishes that read as timber from 3 metres. Limited design flexibility — aluminium does not bend into ornate filigree easily, so most aluminium gates are panel-style or slat-style. Pricing from S$3,500 for a single-gate single-leaf installation. Right for the vast majority of inland Singapore landed homes; right where the homeowner wants the lowest maintenance burden.
Mild steel — the design-flexibility pick
Strong, widest design flexibility (filigree, ornate scrollwork, geometric patterns, mixed-pattern panels), takes powder coating well. Requires powder-coat refresh every 5 to 8 years under Singapore weather conditions, with the cost of refresh roughly S$800 to S$2,500 depending on gate size and complexity. The refresh is non-negotiable — skip it and surface rust appears, then bleeds through any subsequent re-paint. Pricing from S$4,500. Right for design-led projects where the gate's appearance is part of the home's architectural statement and the homeowner accepts the maintenance cycle.
Stainless steel 304 or 316 — the coastal pick
Premium, virtually maintenance-free. The 304 grade is the standard stainless used for most architectural applications and is appropriate for coastal-adjacent inland Singapore. The 316 grade contains molybdenum which dramatically improves resistance to salt-laden air corrosion, and is the only honest material choice for properties within 1 kilometre of the coast (Sentosa Cove, East Coast frontline, parts of Frankel Estate and Joo Chiat, the Changi seafront). Motor sizing, controller quality, and why year 5 matters more than year 1
Motor specification is where quotes hide their differences. Two gates with identical enclosure design and identical price can have wildly different motor specifications, and the cheaper-motor option will fail first.
Sizing the motor correctly
The motor's rated load and the actual gate's weight must match with headroom. A motor rated for a 200kg gate driving an actual 280kg gate (which a 3m × 1.8m mild steel gate often weighs) will run at near-maximum load every cycle. Under Singapore conditions (tropical humidity, daily UV cycling, monsoon-grade dust intrusion), an over-loaded motor's bearings, gears, and capacitor degrade roughly twice as fast as a correctly-sized one. The result is 3-to-5 year failure on a motor that should last 10.
Ask three specific questions of every quote: what is the motor's rated load (in kg or in Nm of torque); what is the actual finished gate weight (the installer should measure during the quote, not estimate); what is the motor's rated cycles-per-hour duty cycle (residential gates need 15 to 25 cycles/hour). If the quote does not answer all three, push back.
Controller and electronics in tropical humidity
The motor is the muscle. The controller is the brain — circuit boards, relays, and capacitors that interpret the remote signal and modulate the motor. Singapore's tropical humidity is harder on controllers than on motors. Cheap controllers fail in 3 to 5 years; premium controllers with conformal-coated boards and humidity-rated capacitors last 10 or more. Brand matters here in ways it does not for the gate enclosure. Established residential gate controller brands (Came, FAAC, BFT, Roger Technology, Nice) all have decade-plus track records in tropical climates. Generic-brand controllers often look identical externally and cost a fraction, with the failure mode arriving in year 4.

Verified June 2026: if a quote lists 'Brand: original' or 'Brand: factory' for the motor and controller without naming the actual manufacturer, the cost difference between that quote and a named-brand quote is the year-5 motor replacement you will pay separately.
Smart access: phone control, video intercom, CCTV integration
Smart-access bundles are the segment of the auto-gate market with the widest price spread and the smallest correlation between price and actual daily utility. Most homeowners want one specific feature; the rest is bundle-padding.
Base smart access (S$800 to S$1,500)
App-based open/close, remote authorization for visitors, basic event log. Replaces the second key fob the family rarely carries. Works over the home Wi-Fi network with a 4G fallback in better units. The feature most owners actually use day-to-day is remote-authorize-the-cleaner-without-being-home.
Mid-tier with video intercom (S$1,500 to S$3,000)
App plus video intercom at the gate, two-way audio, mobile push notifications. The video intercom replaces the unreliable wired intercom in older homes and adds visitor identification before you open the gate. This is the bundle most homeowners actually use and the one we install most often.
Premium with CCTV and ALPR (S$3,000+)
Full CCTV integration (your existing CCTV system triggers when the gate opens, the gate triggers based on plate recognition for authorized vehicles), automatic license plate recognition (ALPR) so the gate opens as the owner's car approaches the driveway, integration with the home alarm system. Worth the cost only if you have a real use case (multiple vehicles entering/exiting, security-sensitive household, family elderly member with carer access patterns to track). Otherwise, the mid-tier delivers 90 percent of the daily utility for half the cost.
What a 1-to-3 day install actually covers
The installation is fast but multi-disciplinary. EMA-licensed electrical work, structural pillar verification, motor and controller mounting, safety sensor positioning, smart-access programming.
Day 1: removal of existing gate (if replacing), site protection, pillar reinforcement check (the gate motor load transfers into the existing brick or concrete pillar — old or under-reinforced pillars sometimes need reinforcement first), electrical isolation by EMA-licensed worker, motor and controller mounting, safety beam alignment and wiring. Day 2: gate panel installation and hanging, motor coupling, controller wiring complete, safety sensor mounting (photo beams across the opening, edge sensors on the leading edge), system commissioning and force adjustment, full safety circuit testing. Auto gates close on people, pets, and cars often enough that mandatory safety equipment is non-negotiable. Skipping safety beams to save S$200 is the kind of saving you regret on the day it matters.

When NOT to buy the gate you are being quoted
Disqualifiers that should make you walk away from a quote, in order of frequency.
Skip if the gate is mild steel or aluminium and you live within 1 km of the coast. Salt-laden air will eat both materials regardless of powder coating. Stainless 316 is the only honest answer for coastal properties; if the quote tries to convince you that 'marine-grade aluminium' is equivalent, walk away.
Skip if the quote does not name the motor and controller brand. The reason it does not name them is that the brand would make the price look high relative to the lower-bid competitors.
Skip if the quote does not list the safety equipment (photo beams, edge sensors). Either they are not included (illegal in some configurations, dangerous in all), or the installer assumed you would not ask.
Skip the smart-access premium bundle if you actually use the gate twice a day from your own car. The app cost will not earn out and the additional electronics are additional failure points.
Skip if the structural pillars are old, cracked, or visibly under-reinforced and the installer is not addressing them. The motor will eventually tear out of the pillar and you will discover this when the gate falls into your driveway.

Manual gate with electric override

Underground motor instead of in-pillar motor
