Auto Gate Battery Backup: Surviving Power Cuts in Singapore

Singapore's grid is reliable but not perfect. Here's what a proper auto gate battery backup costs and why it's worth the small premium.

Auto Gate Battery Backup: Surviving Power Cuts in Singapore

Why You Need It (Even in Singapore)

Singapore's power grid is among the most reliable in the world — average around one outage per customer every couple of years. But "rare" is not "never," and the time it happens is always inconvenient. Coming home in a rainstorm to a dead gate you can't open manually is the worst-case scenario.

A small battery backup unit keeps the gate working for 8–20 open-close cycles after a power cut. For most homes that's enough to ride out any normal outage. The cost is small relative to the gate itself.

What's Inside The Backup Unit

A standard auto gate battery backup is a 12V or 24V sealed lead-acid (SLA) battery, typically 4Ah to 9Ah, wired through a charging circuit to the gate's control board. The battery charges continuously when mains power is available and discharges when needed.

Some premium kits use lithium-ion (LiFePO4) batteries instead. They last longer (8–10 years vs 3–5 for SLA), are physically smaller, and handle Singapore heat better. The cost is roughly double but the longer service life often makes it the cheaper option over 10 years.

Cost Breakdown

Basic 12V/4Ah SLA battery backup: $150–$250 supplied and fitted with a new gate. $200–$350 retrofit on an existing gate. 24V/7Ah for heavier sliding gates: $250–$400. LiFePO4 lithium upgrade: $400–$700.

If your installer doesn't mention battery backup, ask. Some quote it as optional to keep headline prices down. It's a $200 line item, not a $2,000 luxury.

How Long It Actually Lasts

A standard 4Ah backup typically runs a swing gate for 8–12 full cycles after a power cut. A 7Ah for a sliding gate runs 6–10 cycles (sliding motors draw more current). LiFePO4 units last 30–50% longer per charge than SLA equivalents.

Battery lifespan (how long before the battery itself dies) is 3–5 years for SLA in Singapore's heat, 8–10 years for LiFePO4. Heat shortens battery life significantly — if your control box sits in direct afternoon sun, the battery dies sooner. A small shade cover extends life noticeably.

What To Replace And When

SLA batteries should be tested annually during gate servicing and replaced every 3–5 years regardless of whether they "still work." A weak battery can damage the control board's charging circuit. Replacement cost is $80–$180 for SLA, $250–$400 for LiFePO4.

Signs your battery needs replacing: gate slows down or fails during a power cut, you smell something acrid near the control box, or the box shows a low-battery LED. Don't wait until full failure.

Worth It?

Yes. The cost-to-peace-of-mind ratio is excellent. Even if you only use the backup once every two years, the alternative — getting out of your car in a thunderstorm to manually disengage and push a 200kg gate — is genuinely worth $200 to avoid.

WhatsApp us if you're unsure whether your current gate has a battery backup installed. We can have an installer check during the next service.
