Why Integrate Instead Of Buying Separately
Plenty of homes have an auto gate, a separate intercom that hasn't worked properly since 2019, and a CCTV system on a different app. When the doorbell rings, the homeowner has to fumble through three apps to figure out who's there and whether to open the gate.
A properly integrated setup means one app, one screen, one decision. You see who's at the gate, talk to them, and open the gate from the same interface. Done right, this costs $2,500–$6,000 for the whole front-of-house upgrade and adds more daily value than almost any other smart-home spend.
Video Intercom Options
Doorbird (German) is the premium pick. Models like the D1101V and D2101V handle Singapore weather well, integrate with Apple Home and most CCTV systems, and have decent app reliability. Installed cost runs $2,200–$3,500 depending on model.
Akuvox is a strong mid-range alternative at $1,200–$2,200 installed. Hikvision and Dahua offer video intercoms that integrate well with their own CCTV systems if you're already in that ecosystem — installed cost $800–$1,800.
How The Gate Relay Works
The intercom triggers the gate via a dry-contact relay output that connects to your gate control board's "open" input. This is a simple two-wire connection that every reputable gate installer knows how to wire. It works regardless of gate brand.
Some homeowners worry about security — what if someone hacks the intercom? In practice the risk is low because the trigger is local. The intercom itself needs strong passwords and updated firmware, same as any networked device, but the gate-open command isn't exposed to the internet directly.
CCTV Coverage for the Gate Area
Two cameras typically cover the gate well: one mounted high on the house facing the gate (catches faces and number plates of vehicles approaching), and one on the gate post or fence catching anyone standing at the gate. Dahua, Hikvision, and Reolink all do this job well at $200–$500 per camera installed.
Pair the cameras with the intercom's screen or app so when the doorbell rings, the CCTV feed appears too. Most modern intercoms support this via ONVIF or RTSP streaming.
What This Costs To Add To An Existing Gate
If you already have a working auto gate, adding a Doorbird-class intercom and two CCTV cameras typically runs $3,000–$5,500 fully installed. That includes cabling (run in conduit, not loose), the relay wiring to your gate board, app setup, and basic training on how to use the system.
If you're installing a new gate, doing it as one project saves $500–$1,200 in cabling and labour because the trenching and conduit work is already happening for the gate.
Common Mistakes To Avoid
Skipping the conduit. Cables run outside conduit get damaged by sun, rain, and the occasional gardener. Insist on proper EMT or PVC conduit. Pairing premium gate with $99 doorbell-style intercom. The intercom is what you interact with daily — don't skimp here. Forgetting power. Both intercom and cameras need a stable PoE switch or dedicated power supply; running them off the gate's control board is asking for problems.
