Good built-in carpentry starts with what it stores or supports, then turns that requirement into a coordinated cabinet assembly. The external length and finish are only part of the purchase.
Use this guide to compare custom work with suitable modular alternatives, define the contents and operation, and obtain a quotation that identifies materials and responsibilities. Kitchens, wardrobes, display units and vanities share some procurement principles but face different use conditions.
The cabinet maker remains responsible for technical suitability and fixing. The homeowner’s contribution is a clear brief, reviewed samples and a record of the assembly being purchased.
Decide where built-in work is worth doing
Name the problem a fitted unit must solve. An awkward recess, unusual equipment or a coordinated wall of functions can justify custom work. A regular room needing straightforward storage may also suit a modular system or movable furniture.
Compare the whole installed result: usable storage, room movement, delivery and assembly, necessary fixing, finish details and future alteration. A fitted appearance is not the same thing as a custom internal system.
If using standard frames with custom trim, ask how they remain serviceable and removable and whether modifications affect the supplier’s requirements. A hybrid can be useful, but its boundaries need design.

Brief the contents before drawing the fronts
Inventory the items that change the layout: long garments, folded stacks, crockery, equipment, luggage and objects that need frequent access. Measure representative items including handles, hangers and the path through the opening.
Assign the most convenient positions to the intended user’s daily tasks. Consider two people using the storage together and a practical place to set down a laundry basket or other load. A deep compartment is not useful capacity if its contents cannot be reached.
Keep likely changes visible. Adjustable shelves or replaceable organisers can help where the storage mix may change; fixed specialist compartments should answer a stable need. Ask what a later alteration would actually require.
Review every moving part
Show doors and drawers open on the room plan. Check the bed, room door, curtains, neighbouring cabinets and standing position. For sliding fronts, inspect the usable opening at each compartment rather than equating the cabinet width with accessible space.
Have the carpenter coordinate internal drawers with hinges and door movement. Blum’s planning tools connect cabinet geometry and fittings and include collision checks. Request that coordination outcome for the selected assembly.
For powered, lift-up or handleless mechanisms, try a representative installation when practical. The daily opening action and reach can matter more than how the closed front looks.

Specify the cabinet in layers
Request the cabinet body, backing, front construction, finish, edge treatment and hardware separately. A laminate brand identifies a face material; it does not specify the substrate behind it or the way the cabinet is assembled.
Product descriptions need precision. EGGER distinguishes a moisture-resistant P3 board from its standard P2 product; that example should not be turned into a claim about every board sold under a similar colour or label. Ask for the actual product or grade and proposed use.
Review the assembly where moisture or heat exposure is relevant. Formica’s care guidance cautions against flooding near seams. A durable surface does not by itself establish the performance of cut-outs, edges and the cabinet body.

Keep services and replacement routes accessible
For kitchen and vanity cabinets, coordinate the actual appliances and fittings before manufacture. Ask how the plumber or appliance technician reaches the intended service points and removes equipment. An attractive enclosure should not trap the component inside.
For integrated lighting, identify drivers, controls and the replacement route. Electrical work should be handled by the appropriate Licensed Electrical Worker. Agree the boundary between the carpenter supplying the enclosure and the electrical installer supplying and testing the system.
If a wall has a known damp problem, investigate the cause before covering it. Changing a board specification is not a substitute for diagnosing a leak or other moisture source.

Compare scope after the layout matches
A running-foot rate cannot compare unlike cabinet interiors. Issue the same layout and contents brief to bidders, then compare materials, hardware, accessory quantities, installation and making good.
Identify allowances and exclusions. Clarify delivery, site access, final measurement, protection, electrical interfaces, removal of old work and restoration of affected finishes. A lower workshop price may omit tasks included in another installed quotation.
Agree a substitution process covering hidden materials as well as visible finishes. The contractor should identify the replacement and its effect before approval. “Equivalent” is a proposal to assess, not an automatic permission to change the assembly.
Release fabrication against a current drawing
Confirm who takes final dimensions and when, especially where flooring, walls or service positions are still changing. The manufacturing drawing should reflect the finished conditions it depends on.
Approve labelled samples for visible work and record important junctions and grain direction. Keep the hardware schedule linked to the relevant cabinets. If the room or appliance changes, ask the coordinator which drawings must be updated.
Name the drawing revision and any outstanding conditions in the release. A general chat response should not be the only record of which design went to the workshop.
Check use, care and future identification
At handover, operate each door, drawer and intended removable part with the installer. Compare the internal arrangement and visible finish with the final approved record. Ask for a demonstration of service openings rather than dismantling fixed work yourself.
Retain hardware models, finish codes, care instructions, final drawings and installer contact. Record defects and the agreed follow-up process. Product warranties and workmanship obligations should be read for their actual scope.
Use the storage as planned and observe any practical gaps before adding accessories. A cabinet should make everyday tasks simpler, not depend on the household repeatedly emptying one compartment to reach another.
