Sliding or Hinged Wardrobe Doors? Test Access to the Contents

The wardrobe has two access problems

One is movement in the bedroom: can you stand in front of it without blocking the route around the bed? The other is movement inside the wardrobe: can you reach the clothes or open the drawer you need? Choose a door arrangement that solves both.

IKEA’s PAX planning guidance distinguishes hinged-door swing from sliding-door space needs and requires compatible internal components. Its dimensions apply to that system. For custom carpentry, obtain the same kind of coordinated information from your designer rather than borrowing a catalogue clearance from an unrelated wardrobe.

Compare three everyday scenes

First, get dressed while another person passes behind you. Mark the actual bed, bedside table and wardrobe handles. An open hinged door can create a temporary obstacle even when the closed wardrobe leaves a comfortable route.

Second, put away a laundry basket. Identify where the basket sits and which compartments must be open together. With overlapping sliding panels, ask the carpenter to show the usable opening at every drawer and hanging bay; the total wardrobe width is not the opening width.

Third, retrieve a bulky item from a high or deep compartment. Check whether the opening and reach are practical. Do not assume that a larger cabinet creates more useful storage if a door panel or internal partition prevents access.

Use the comparison to expose the trade-off

The approval drawing should show closed fronts and their open positions, internal drawers and nearby obstructions. For a complex corner or mixed-door arrangement, a single front elevation is inadequate. Ask for the relevant plan or section and a demonstration of the intended hardware where possible.

If a contractor proposes shallow storage to save room, check the actual clothes, hangers and storage accessories. Reducing external depth without reviewing the interior can transfer the problem from the bedroom walkway to crushed or awkwardly arranged belongings.

Make the choice room by room

A home need not use one door type everywhere. A guest-room wardrobe with occasional access may have different priorities from the main bedroom’s daily storage. A separate dressing room may favour open compartments if the household accepts visible contents and the associated cleaning routine.

Approve the arrangement after checking real contents and movements, then keep that geometry stable through hardware selection. A late change from hinged to sliding fronts can affect the internal layout and cannot safely be treated as a cosmetic substitution.
