Stairlift Installation Day: What Actually Happens

A stairlift installation in Singapore takes about a day — no drilling into walls, no permits, no mess. Here is exactly what to expect from arrival to first ride.

Stairlift Installation Day: What Actually Happens

Before Install Day

A few days before installation, the installer will confirm the model, colour, and rail length, and ask for power point access near the top or bottom of the stairs. Stairlifts run on rechargeable batteries that need to charge at the parking position, so a single 13A socket within two metres of the parking end is required.

Clear the staircase of any rugs, runners, or decorative items the day before. The installer will need full access to every step. If you have a stair gate for young grandchildren, it can usually stay — the installer will work around it.

Arrival and Survey Recap

On install day, the team arrives with the rail, chair unit, controls, and tools. Most installs in Singapore start between 9am and 10am. The lead installer walks the staircase one more time to confirm the survey measurements, then marks where the rail will sit on the treads.

For a straight stairlift, this confirmation step takes ten minutes. For a curved unit, it can take thirty minutes as the rail is offered up to the stair to check alignment.

Rail Installation

This is the longest part of the day. The rail is mounted to the treads (the horizontal step surfaces), not the wall. Brackets are bolted into the treads using small fixings that go into the wood or concrete substructure — there is no wall drilling and no damage to your wall finish.

For a straight stairlift, rail mounting typically takes 90 minutes to 2 hours. For a curved unit, expect 3 to 4 hours because each rail joint must be aligned to within millimetres for a smooth ride.

Chair Unit and Electrical

Once the rail is secure, the chair carriage is lifted onto the rail and the drive motor is connected. The charging point is mounted at the parking end and wired to the 13A socket using a short cable. No new circuit, no electrician needed for most installs.

The chair is then fitted with the seat, armrests, footrest, and seatbelt. The installer will configure the soft-start, soft-stop, and the remote control pairing.

Testing and Handover

Before handover, the installer will run the lift up and down the full rail at least three times — first empty, then with the installer riding it, then under load to confirm safe operation. They will test the seatbelt sensor, the footrest sensors that stop the lift if anything is on the stairs, and the emergency stop.

You and the primary user then get a hands-on demonstration. The user takes the first ride with the installer present. Expect the full handover briefing — controls, seatbelt, charging routine, what to do in a power cut — to take 20 to 30 minutes.

Total Time and What Happens After

A straight stairlift install in Singapore is usually done in 4 to 6 hours total. A curved install runs 6 to 8 hours and occasionally spills into a second short day. The installer leaves the staircase swept and any packaging removed.

After install, your stairlift is fully usable that same evening. The first service is typically scheduled at the six-month mark, then annually after that. If anything feels off in the first week — unusual noise, slow start — call the installer and they will return at no cost.
