Roof Waterproofing in Singapore: A Buying Guide →Key takeaways
- A test method must fit the roof assembly and the question being investigated.
- Do not prescribe a universal flood depth or duration from an unrelated standard.
- Keep location, method, conditions, limitations and corrective action together in the test record.
Agree the question before agreeing the test
A roof test should answer a defined question: whether the completed waterproofing has defects within an agreed area under specified conditions. A photo of a wet roof and the words “passed water test” leave too much unclear. Ask the contractor or appointed consultant to propose the method, its suitability and acceptance criteria before work begins.
Check the standard’s scope
ASTM D5957 is sometimes mentioned in waterproofing discussions. Its public scope expressly excludes building roofing systems; it addresses certain horizontal deck applications. That makes it a poor basis for declaring one mandatory flood test for every Singapore roof. Roof terraces and other assemblies need their own applicability assessment. The public guidance also highlights structural loading and curing considerations for the applications it covers.

Use a short acceptance card
The following is an editorial handover aid, not a test procedure. The professional team chooses and conducts any testing. Homeowners should not block drains or climb onto a roof to reproduce it.
| Record | What it should say |
|---|---|
| Area and purpose | Marked roof zone and the defect or performance question being checked. |
| Method and suitability | Selected method, who accepted it, and relevant roof/product limitations. |
| Readiness | Preparation complete and materials ready under the specified system requirements. |
| Result | Observed findings, inaccessible areas and conditions that were not assessed. |
| Close-out | Defect locations, repairs, repeat checks and the person accepting completion. |
Read a pass within its limits
An agreed check is evidence about the tested area and conditions. It does not establish how untested concealed junctions will perform, excuse incomplete detailing or remove future maintenance duties. Retain construction photos before coverings hide the membrane, product records and the final marked drawing with the test report. If work follows the test, record which areas need rechecking.
