Start with the route through the house
A staircase can be wide enough for a particular lift while its approach remains awkward. A rail may extend into a hall; a folded chair may sit beside a bedroom door; a user may need to turn onto a small landing. Photograph these adjoining spaces and describe who passes through them, including someone carrying laundry or assisting the lift user.
Ask the surveyor to mark the proposed lower rail endpoint, upper stopping position and each parking position on a plan. Treat the plan as an operating layout: the position used while boarding may differ from the position used overnight.

Walk through four separate states
Do the walkthrough before accepting a model. Where a full demonstration is unavailable, use the supplier’s dimensioned layout and a safe floor outline. Do not leave loose objects or mock rails on the stairs.

Understand what a folding rail changes

Also identify the charging positions. A location that looks tidy is not a suitable routine parking place if the installed system needs to charge somewhere else. Have the supplier write the intended end-of-use routine in the handover notes.

Keep the access decision separate from the sales drawing
Where balance, turning or assisted transfers are difficult, ask the relevant clinician or occupational therapist to assess the person’s needs alongside the survey. The equipment supplier can confirm the machine layout; the user’s ability to transfer safely needs its own attention.
