Decide what the move improves
Moving the kitchen sink can free a useful preparation counter, improve the relationship to the dishwasher or turn an awkward corner into usable storage. It can also create a long pipe route for a small visual benefit. Compare the existing position with a proposed position using the same kitchen layout and equipment list.
Write down the intended gain: more uninterrupted worktop, less crossing between cooks, a clearer window view or better washing-up space. If the gain can be achieved by changing storage or moving a loose appliance, price that alternative as well. A sink on an island is a layout choice, not an automatic upgrade.
Separate water supply from water leaving the sink
PUB distinguishes water-service plumbing from sanitary plumbing. A relocation can affect both, so the assessment should identify how water reaches the tap and how used water leaves the sink. Regulated work requires a Licensed Plumber, with specific exceptions for simple tasks. Have the actual scope classified rather than assuming the rules for replacing a tap cover all the proposed work.
Ask the plumber to walk the route on site. Where are the existing connections? What construction would the new route cross? Which cabinets or finishes would conceal it? If drainage feasibility requires a different floor or cabinet arrangement, that needs to be reflected in the design before installation.

A useful comparison shows the consequences of each option, including what remains uncertain. It should not compare a complete relocation with a keep-position option that quietly excludes replacement of damaged fittings.

Do not use a rendering as a services drawing
An island sink often looks uncluttered because its pipes are invisible in the image. Ask for a drawing or marked site plan showing where those services actually pass. If a floor build-up or raised cabinet base is proposed, compare it with doorways, adjacent finishes and appliance removal before accepting it.
Check the cabinet interior as well. A larger sink bowl changes the space available for a pull-out bin or filter. The tap’s mounting and moving parts also need access. Draw these components at their actual sizes rather than ordering a storage insert before the plumbing arrangement is known.
IKEA’s workflow guidance puts preparation space and nearby washing-up functions in the same planning conversation. Use that as a functional test: does the new position make a whole meal easier, or merely move the sink to the visual centre?
Ask for an outcome and an uncertainty allowance
Before approving the change, request the confirmed scope, affected finishes, who carries out the regulated work, access provisions and what happens if concealed conditions differ from the survey. Ask the contractor to identify what can be verified before opening up and which decisions must wait.
If the route is unresolved, keep both layout options open. Once it is confirmed, coordinate the sink, tap, countertop and cabinet drawings. Do not release a cut-out for an unconfirmed position.
