Draw the journeys that happen every day
Mark where a resident returns on foot, where a visitor waits to use the intercom and where a driver stops before opening the gate. Add the letterbox, parcel location and bin route. These points should not require someone to stand in the moving gate’s path.
Then draw the actual parked-car positions. A swing leaf needs its movement area; a sliding gate needs its travel area. The useful question is whether the complete arrangement works while the house is in normal use.
Keep the public frontage in the design
LTA’s landed-house access guidance considers dedicated pedestrian access, gate swing, footpath conditions and the relationship between gate posts and the entrance. It recommends inward swing to avoid affecting pedestrians and cyclists. Treat the public edge as a design constraint, not spare space to absorb a difficult driveway.
If work changes the access point, kerb, drain, boundary or footpath, have the appropriate professional establish the applicable requirements before ordering the gate. A gate supplier’s standard drawing is not a determination of those interfaces.

Choose controls after the route is clear
A phone app or intercom can make access convenient, but remote operation increases the importance of understanding who may be near the gate. Ask the installer how the complete protective arrangement suits the proposed mode of use.
HSE’s guidance identifies moving, trapping and crushing hazards across the assembled gate. Nice’s photocell instructions also warn against passing through while the gate is moving. Build the household routine around a fully open, stationary gate and the installed instructions, rather than expecting a sensor to make every movement safe.
