Define the water paths before comparing systems
A basement can be exposed to water through the below-ground envelope, construction joints, service penetrations or external openings. Separate envelope waterproofing from drainage
The waterproofing design addresses the building’s resistance to water ingress. The drainage and flood-protection design addresses relevant surface-water routes, levels and discharge. Both may be needed, and their interfaces must be coordinated.
PUB’s current drainage code includes platform and crest provisions and pumped-drainage requirements. Ask a failure question, not just a capacity question
A homeowner does not need to size a pump to ask what happens if one is unavailable. Keep construction-stage verification in the scope
Many critical details become difficult to inspect after backfilling or finishing. Agree with the designer which stages require inspection and which records must be captured. Give the builder a defined hold point where appropriate rather than asking for photographs only after the work has disappeared.
If a later trade adds a penetration or alters a protected opening, have the responsible team review the change. PUB’s submission guidance treats changes to basement openings and crest protection as relevant to the route; an interior reconfiguration can have an external water-protection consequence.

Budget for operation as part of the decision
Ask for the proposed maintenance tasks, professional servicing arrangements, replacement-access strategy and any applicable inspection or declaration duties. Clarify who owns those obligations when the property is handed over or sold.
Compare basement proposals with this operating commitment included. A lower initial price that leaves system coordination or ongoing responsibility undefined is an incomplete comparison, even when its waterproofing product sounds familiar.
