Choose a Shower Screen by Testing the Door Movement

Start with a movement drawing

Before choosing the glass finish, draw the bathroom entrance door, shower opening, toilet, vanity drawers and towel positions on the same plan. Mark every moving edge. Then test a person entering with a towel, reaching the controls and leaving without stepping around an open vanity drawer.

This reveals why the same shower enclosure can work in one room and become awkward in another. A hinged panel may provide an uncomplicated entry but need an unobstructed sweep. A sliding system avoids that sweep yet introduces tracks, overlapping glass and a particular usable opening. A fixed panel removes a moving component but leaves an open route for spray. None is the default winner.

Compare the arrangements on daily tasks

Use three short mock-ups

First, mark the proposed opening with removable tape on the dry floor or a paper plan. Move through it carrying the items you normally use. Include the person with the greatest access difficulty. A tape exercise helps expose a bad arrangement, but it cannot certify accessibility or glass safety.

Second, simulate cleaning. Can the outside and inside of each fixed panel be reached? Will a cleaner need to stand on a wet ledge to reach behind a vanity? If the sliding glass overlaps, ask the supplier to demonstrate how that area is cleaned and how the specified hardware is maintained.

Third, consider assistance. If someone becomes unwell inside, what happens to the opening? Where could another person stand? A household anticipating mobility support should have the arrangement assessed for its actual needs rather than rely on a generic “senior-friendly” label.

Do not solve door alignment by defeating drainage

The manufacturer’s installation conditions govern the chosen screen: opening dimensions, supporting ledges, wall geometry and fixing arrangements are system-specific. Kohler’s sliding-door instructions illustrate that dependence. Its separate support note explains how an imperfect bottom track can affect operation and water management.

That is not advice to flatten the shower floor. The installer must coordinate the door’s support geometry with the wet-area drainage design. Ask for this junction to be resolved before tiling, including the intended fixing locations and waterproofing interface. The homeowner’s task is to request a coordinated detail, not choose drilling depths or sealant locations.

Inspect the installed operation

At handover, have the installer demonstrate the full movement, latching and the intended water-control performance under normal use. Look for contact with nearby fittings, an awkward handle reach or an opening narrower than the agreed drawing. Record unresolved defects with photographs and an agreed response.

Keep the screen model, hardware references and care instructions. If the quote simply says “tempered glass screen”, request enough detail to know which arrangement, fittings and installation responsibility you are actually buying.
