Flooring in Singapore: A Landed-Home Buying Guide →Key takeaways
- Photograph product and carton labels before packaging is discarded.
- Agree spare quantities with the installer for the actual layout and repair method.
- A matching product name may not guarantee a visually identical later batch.
Make the spare material identifiable
A loose tile in a storeroom is useful only if a future installer can connect it to the floor being repaired. Before packaging is removed, photograph the product labels and keep the invoice and installation record. Label retained material with the room or area where it was used.
Daltile’s selection guidance explains that shade variation can exist within and between tiles. Keep the exact product, colour or finish and available shade or batch information rather than assuming that a familiar collection name identifies a perfect future match.
Ask for a small repair file
- Exact brand, collection, product code, finish and size.
- Photographs of carton labels, including batch, shade or calibre identifiers where supplied.
- Rooms and laying direction or pattern, with useful installed photographs.
- Installer contact, purchase record and product care instructions.
- Location and quantity of retained stock, agreed with the installer.
Spare quantity is a project decision
Ask the installer to recommend a reserve based on the material, pattern, cut pieces and feasible repair method. There is no single percentage that fits every floor. A complex pattern may need particular pieces; a floating plank repair may require a different access route from a bonded tile replacement.
Quick-Step’s Alpha Vinyl installation instructions advise retaining product end labels with the purchase receipt. For that or another system, also retain the applicable installation and care documents so a later contractor can identify how the floor was intended to function.
Store the reserve appropriately
Follow the supplier’s storage guidance and label the material so it is not mistaken for unwanted renovation debris. Do not promise yourself that spare stock will make any repair invisible: the installed floor may age, wear or change appearance, and the repair still needs a suitable method.
Before ordering a future replacement, have the contractor compare the retained reference with the installed floor and proposed new supply. A five-minute identification record now can prevent an avoidable search through old chats when a damaged piece finally needs attention.
