Bring the shortlisted materials together
A floor, cabinet front and wall colour can each look convincing alone and compete when installed side by side. Review a small, labelled group of the actual shortlisted materials in the room where they will be used. Include the intended lighting information rather than choosing finishes in one context and lamps in another.
The purpose is not to predict the finished room perfectly from a few samples. It is to expose obvious conflicts and record what is being approved. A phone image or rendering is a useful communication aid, but it should not become the sole physical colour reference.
Check more than the centre of the sample
Inspect the surface at the angle from which it will normally be seen. Include an edge or junction sample for prominent cabinetry where feasible. Ask how grain direction, panel divisions and trim affect the installed appearance.
For tile, review the manufacturer’s shade-variation information and enough representative pieces to understand the intended range. Daltile’s selection guide distinguishes variation within and between tiles. A single unusually quiet piece may not represent a deliberately varied collection.

Review the lighting effect on the surface
Compare the samples under relevant daylight and the planned evening light where a representative demonstration is possible. Ask the lighting designer how a surface is intended to be illuminated, especially at textured feature walls or highly visible cabinetry.
ERCO distinguishes uniform wallwashing from grazing light that emphasises texture. A wall selected for a smooth, quiet appearance may read differently under a light placed close to it. Coordinate the desired effect with the finish rather than treating light placement as a separate final decoration.
Read the care sheet before saying yes
Ask what ordinary cleaning involves and which products or exposures are restricted. Formica’s laminate care guidance, for example, warns against flooding near seams. A durable face finish still has use conditions, and the assembled edge or substrate matters.
Compare those conditions with the household’s actual routine. If a finish requires a cleaning habit the household will not maintain, choose a more suitable product or revise the use. Do not approve a sample on appearance and discover the care commitment only at handover.
Keep the approved reference available
Retain the labelled sample or an agreed representative reference and the final selection schedule. If supply changes, review the replacement instead of accepting a new code under the old approval. A similar description may hide a different texture, sheen or variation.
At handover, compare the work with the recorded selection and relevant installation expectations. The sample establishes an appearance reference; it does not certify hidden construction or eliminate natural and manufactured variation.
