Carpentry and Built-Ins in Singapore: Buying Guide →Key takeaways
- Record the hardware model and which cabinet it belongs to.
- The cabinet maker should confirm suitability for the planned door or drawer.
- An agreed substitution process matters as much as a brand name.
Ask which fitting goes in which cabinet
A quotation that names a respected hardware brand still leaves an important question unanswered: which product is being installed, and is it suitable for this cabinet? Ask for a schedule linking the actual hinge, runner or lift-system reference to the relevant door or drawer.
Blum’s planning tools connect cabinet geometry, fronts and fittings and include collision checking. That illustrates why hardware selection is a planning task, not simply a brand upgrade. The carpenter should verify the assembly; the homeowner should not choose a runner only by the largest capacity printed in a catalogue.

Use a four-column confirmation
Scroll across to compare all columns →
| Cabinet or drawer | Hardware reference | Intended use | Confirmation needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wide crockery drawer | Brand and runner model | Stored items and anticipated load | Carpenter confirms drawer construction and system suitability |
| Tall or heavy door | Hinge family and configuration | Actual front material and dimensions | Carpenter confirms quantity, layout and operation |
| Door beside a wall | Hinge and opening arrangement | Access to the full interior | Check handle, wall and adjacent drawer interference |
| Handleless front | Opening mechanism | Daily opening and closing | Demonstrate the actual mechanism and adjustment route |
Agree what happens if it changes
Add a simple condition: the contractor identifies a proposed replacement and obtains approval before ordering or installing it. “Equivalent” should explain the effect on operation, appearance, capacity and servicing, not merely price. A different fitting may also alter the cabinet’s manufacturing detail.
At handover, ask the installer to demonstrate normal operation and explain care and adjustment support. Keep a photograph of accessible product identification and the final schedule. These records help a later repair technician far more than a general invoice line saying “premium accessories”.
If the cabinet contains integrated lighting or powered mechanisms, also record the relevant power components and how the responsible installer reaches them. Do not allow a clean exterior to conceal an unresolved replacement route.

Hardware planning links cabinet geometry, front weight, fittings and collision checks; a brand name alone does not specify a cabinet assembly.
